5 Negatives of Drinking Alcohol

This past week was a rough one when it comes to drinking. My friend came and visited and we ended up going out for like 6 days in a row. It seems this has been happening a lot this year with all of the visitors I have been having.

However, yesterday I decided it is time to make some major life changes. I am going to take some time off from the whole party/nighlife scene and find better things to do. I realized it is pointless to keep drinking this much and it is not helping me become the person I want to be. I am going to get back to my fitness goals which I completely abandoned the last few months. I am going to exercise a lot more and eat a very healthy diet like I used to.

While I was making this decision, I got to thinking about alcohol and wanted to come up with a list of the 5 reasons that drinking alcohol is not the answer to any of life’s questions. So here is what I came up with:

1. It is Unhealthy

Alcohol has a lot of negative impacts on your health. It wrecks havoc on all of your organs, especially the liver. It dehydrates you like no other. But worst of all. it contains empty calories that add up REAL quick! You may not thing a 110 calories for a beer is a lot, but what happens when you drink 12 of them? Thats over 1300 calories that provide no nutritional value what so ever. So what happens is you start gaining weight. It also increases your appetite which causes you too eat more than usual.

2. It Costs A Lot

Alcohol can cause you to blow more money in less time than you ever thought possible. Especially when you go out to expensive bars and clubs. Drinks can run as high as 25 dollars a piece depending on where you live. VIP bottle service takes it to a whole new level and can cost anywhere from one hundred dollars up to a few thousand.

The cost of the alcohol alone isn’t even everything. When drinking alcohol, you are also more likely to buy things you do not need. You start buying drinks for a strangers and before you know it your wallet is empty and your standing at the ATM machine. Add in a late night snack after bar close and your spending even more money.

Alcohol can also get you in trouble with the law, which always costs a lot of money. Whether it is driving while intoxicated or drunk in public, it will surely help drain your bank account.

3. It Becomes “Easy To Do”

Drinking in moderation is fine in my opinion. But when you start bingeing it becomes a problem. At first it is tough to stay functional since you are always hungover. But what I have realized, is it actually gets easier to drink as time goes on. If you binge on a nightly basis, it becomes very easy to drink a ton of alcohol and still show up at work on time. You may think this is the way to do it, but I promise it isn’t. Eventually it catches up with you in some shape or form.

4. It Makes You Send Tons of Text Messages

I just had to throw this one in there. Drinking a lot of alcohol can cause you to do a lot of stupid things. One of these things just happens to be text messaging. Countless times I have found myself texting up a storm at 3 in the morning for no good apparent reason other than it sounded like a good idea at the time. The next thing I knew, I had sent 12 messages to the same person in a matter of 5 minutes (you know who you are). And most of them barely resembled the English language in any way, shape, or form.

5. It Prevents You From Getting Things Done

This is one of the things that I really start to notice if I drink a lot. You lose your motivation to actually do something, and before you know it you have given up on your goals. Fitness and financial goals are always the first ones to go for me. It’s really hard to stay motivated in life if you drink often. So the real solution is too cut out drinking, or at least the amount you drink.

So please, wish me luck on the new journey. I am going to find more adventurous things to do that I can blog about since I am sure people are getting sick of the drinking stories. The next decision is the really big one, what am I doing in 2 months when my lease is up? We will save that for a future post…

What you say makes alot of sense and lately I have been cutting down on my alcohol consumption also and at 54 I think it’s about time. It can too easily take control.

Another nice post man. Question, why do you do so many lists? I like them a lot, I’m not saying I don’t, but I was just wondering if there was some reason for all of them lately.

I found this post while searching for reasons to reform my drinking habits. Alcohol’s ill effects are becoming more apparent to me by the day. Nonetheless, it is important that I discovered these truths first-hand. I’m more determined than ever to lose this crutch. Thank you for helping to blaze this new trail!

I just read your comments on alcohol Justin and share your feelings for sure. I wish you much luck in getting back on track with your life. Eating better, working out, less partying and better habits. My thoughts will be with you and your success.

  9. Another thing about drinking that I find is that what once was a buzzed feeling becomes normal. I used to just have 2 strong drinks going out and I would feel pretty intoxicated. But what started happening after a while is that I felt pretty normal after having 2 drinks, so now I needed 3 drinks to get that same feeling. And so on.

  10. On a lighter night, the text message reason is pretty funny. I heard of a site that is out there that lists all “late night texts” – it’s a pretty interesting site that is funny.
