A Look At Austin, Texas
Now that I am rested up and ready to start out the week, I thought I would go back and recap my vacation. Austin has always been a place I wanted to visit and I managed to see just about everything I wanted to see while I was there.
First Impression
When first arriving in Austin, I was pretty excited. It was nice to see grass and trees again, instead of the usual cacti and dirt. It reminded me a lot of Wisconsin, except it was 68 degrees outside in the winter. I would say that Madison, Wisconsin and Austin are very much alike in just about every aspect. A large college, the capital building, and water nearby. Very cool!
Downtown Austin
My favorite part about Austin was the downtown area. It felt much more like a big city than Phoenix. There are more tall buildings and people walking around than downtown Phoenix. It actually has some life to it.
The skyline of Austin is awesome, since it is right on the Colorado river. Here is a picture I took of the skyline from across the river:
I also took a picture of the capital building, which also reminded me a lot of the Wisconsin capital:
Barton Springs
In my post about heading to Austin, Will commented about a few places to see. One of them was Barton Springs. So I took his advice and checked it out. It’s like a city pool only it is a natural spring that stays around 68 degrees all year round. I was surprised to see so many people swimming in it since it was January.
Here is a picture of Barton Springs:
It is definitely somewhere I would hang out all year. It sure beats swimming in chlorine…
Some Other Places To See
I managed to see a lot more of Austin, such as the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn which overlooks the city near the river. Here is a picture of the statue:
I also went and checked out Waterloo Records and Book People, two more recommendations by Will. They were pretty cool and I even bought a music DVD at the record store.
My Conclusion
All I can say is I loved the city. There was so much going on and it is exactly what I have been looking for in a city. Since I liked it so much, I decided that tomorrow’s post will be 5 Reasons I’m Moving To Austin.
So come back to check it out.

Wow… liked it THAT much after that little time, eh? That must be some city.
When would you be moving there?
Well, I have been thinking about moving for awhile now and Austin was always one of the cities on my list. So I have always had Austin in the back of my mind.
End of May/Beginning of June is probably going to be when I packed up my stuff and head out.
Austin is definitely a beautiful city, but it’s like a ghost town on X’mas and new year.
Just make sure that you drive careful on highway at night. See what I have gotten myself into.
Weekend Confession – life is more than expecting the unexpected
We are so glad that we are still alive!
Wow- I would’ve had a burger and beef ribs to celebrate that one…. Driving in Texas I had a nice smash too– concrete though, not cow… compliments of Black Ice…something I’ve never experienced before that point. Was kind of fun ‘cept dealing with the insurance.
Great photos. Looks like a beautiful city. If you really do move there, hope you like it.
Sounds like a great place. My brother’s wife is from there and her parents still live near Austin. I was invited down a million times and would love to check it out. That spring looks like a sweet swimming hole.
OMG, I lived in Austin for several years and this brings back so many memories! Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

Sweet! So from reading this blog post I think that it’s safe to visit there. I’m sure during the Summer time it’s 10 times better. Did you get any night life in?
@ Ace: I actually managed to hit up the night scene 3 nights. New Years was crazy. They had 6th street blocked off to traffic. There are tons of bars and live music and the drink prices were pretty low.
You live such an exciting life, and those pictures are simply stunning. I am always eager to hear of your latest adventures, ha.
Thanks for the enlightening and entertaining post. I love traveling vicariously through you!
