I’m a firm believer of setting realistic goals. However, I’m also a big thinker who feels that no one should ever sell themselves short. You should never set a goal for yourself that is too easy to accomplish.

Instead, constantly push yourself as hard as possible. Why? Because pushing yourself makes you a stronger person. And who doesn’t want to be a stronger person?

So here’s a thought: why not set a goal of making this year the best year of your life? Can you think of a single reason why it shouldn’t be? I can’t.

So how can you make this year an amazing one? Start by doing some the following things. You don’t have to do them all, but give a few of them a shot and see how they work out for you.

Stop Waiting

In 2010, make it a goal to stop waiting for things to happen. Get out there and take some action. It doesn’t matter if you are still not sure where you want to end up. Just take action and you will be surprised as to what happens. As soon as you start taking action, you get in a rhythm where you constantly get things done.

So say so long to procrastination, there’s no room for it this year.

Task: Sometime in the next week or two, I want you to go out and do something you’ve always wanted to do but have been holding off on. It doesn’t matter if it’s something crazy like skydiving or simply heading to the bookstore and grabbing a book you have always wanted to read. Just get out there and give it a shot!

Set Goals

If you’ve ever read a self-help book, you’ve probably heard of goal setting and how important it is. Without setting goals, you have no idea where you are going or what you are trying to do. Goals also make it easier to get where you want to be because you can actually measure you success based on what your goals are.

Task: In order for 2010 to be the best year ever, I want you to spend a minimum of two hours evaluating your goals and writing them down somewhere. Whether you do it on actual paper or on your computer is completely up to you. The key is to just get the goals down somewhere so you can constantly look at them and remind yourself what it is you want to accomplish.

I want you to really dig deep and throw out some crazy goals for this year. Something you can’t even imagine actually accomplishing. This will ensure that you truly push yourself to not only become a better person, but also to make this year the best ever.

Take Time For Yourself

This is a big one. In 2010, make it a goal to take time for yourself. It’s amazing how good it feels when you take a break from your everyday life to just relax and enjoy yourself. Try reading, meditating, or something else you find relaxing. I’m a big fan of sitting outside and doing word search puzzles myself.

Task: My guess is you have a pretty hectic schedule the way it is. So take some time to look over your schedule and figure out where you can squeeze in some alone time. If you can, try to get at least 30 minutes each day if possible. If you can’t do it everyday, then plan on taking time to yourself every other day.

Enjoy The Moment

We have a tendency to always be looking forward to things that are happening in the future. Am I correct? I know I do it from time to time and it’s a tough habit to break. But life is all about living in the moment. Right now is the only “real time” we have in our lives. We can’t go back in time and we can’t travel forward in time.

So it’s important to practice the art of living in the moment.

Task: To live in the moment, try concentrating on what you are doing. For example, a good way to practice living in the moment is by focusing on your food when you eat. Don’t read or watch TV while you eat but instead focus on the food, the taste, and the experience. It’s amazing how much better it is when you pay attention to what you are eating.

Keep A Journal

This one may not be for everyone, but I am a HUGE fan of keeping journals. The main reason being it allows me to let out my feelings and thoughts. It’s also an easy way to track my goals and see what I’ve accomplished.

It’s pretty awesome being able to dial in to a certain day from last year and immediately remember what I did. It works like a second brain, only this one doesn’t forget anything.

Task: If you want to give journal writing a try, I highly encourage checking my post: The Art of Journal Writing. It’s got some great advice and details on how I keep a journal.

Focus

For me, 2010 is going to be a year of focus. The focused mind can accomplish great things and I know this from hands-on experience. This is why goal setting is so important. If you have clear and precise goals, you can focus on them and put all your energy into attaining them.

However, goal setting is no longer enough. We live in a world that is literally FILLED with distractions. Everywhere you turn there is something demanding your attention. Whether it’s your phone, Facebook Page, Twitter profile, television, video games, or magazines; they are all full of distractions.

So the secret is to pull yourself away from all the distractions and find a certain place and time that you can focus in on your work, goals, and life. If you have to pull the plug on your router, do it.

I find that working late at night works for me since there are a lot less distractions happening. However, the key is to find a time and place that works for YOU.

Task: The best advice I can give to focus is to start experimenting with what works for you. Keep track of your productivity levels throughout the day and find when your mind is the most focused. This is when you should be busy at work doing the things you love.

Also, schedule some “focus time” into your life where you completely cut yourself off from distractions. Shut off your cellphone, turn off the television, and avoid any distractions you might have in your life.

Simplify

Is your life filled up beyond capacity? I know mine was not too long ago. It really amazes me at how much stuff we manage to do, as well as accumulate in our lives. From the second we wake up, we perform task after task all the way up until bedtime. It’s amazing how we manage to stay sane through our everyday lives.

Luckily, simplifying can completely change your life. You don’t have to go full-pledged minimalist to reap the rewards either, though I highly recommend it. Just getting rid of some of your unused belongings can dramatically clear your mind and make you feel more at ease. The same goes for automating small tasks like paying bills and opting out of paper statements. I can tell you one thing, I don’t miss getting mail…

Task: This year, try simplifying in at least one way. It might be as simple as scheduling auto billing. This can easily save you a good amount of time over the course of a year. If stuff is your problem, try taking an inventory of all your belongings and figure out what you can get rid of. Less stuff is not only less things to worry about, but it’s also less things to clean and find room for.

Try New Things

If 2010 is going to be the best year ever, we need to try some new stuff! I’ve never met a single person who didn’t have at least one thing they wanted to try sometime in their life. Whether it’s learning a new language, taking up a new hobby, or starting a business.

Trying new things is what life is all about. Imagine how boring it would be if we were never able to go out and experience what life has to offer.

Task: Set a goal this year to go out and try something you have NEVER done before. There has to be something you’ve always dreamed of doing or have at least heard about from a friend. Just get out there and give it a shot. If you end up hating it, you can feel good knowing you at least gave it a try.

Learn Something New

This goes right along with the last idea. Just like trying new things, learning new things can change your life for the better. I have always been a big fan of learning because it’s fun, challenging, and highly rewarding.

Learning new things also allows us to meet new people, have more in common with those we already know, and expand our minds.

Task: Go out and learn something new this year. It doesn’t matter if it’s from a book, a class, or on the internet. Just set a goal to learn something new.

If you’re not sure what you want to learn about, try grabbing a class schedule from a local community college and take a class you might find interesting. Who knows, you might even end up meeting some awesome like-minded people.

Overcome Fears

I must admit that I have my fears, whether they are of real things (like snakes) or of certain situations (public speaking). I assume most of you out there have fears as well.

So what if we try to overcome our fears this year? What if we go out and actually experience the things we are afraid of? If we can do this, I have a feeling 2010 is going to kick some ass.

Lets say you’re afraid of cockroaches. So this year, you decide your going to get over that fear once and for all. So what you are going to do is go out and find a zoo or some other place that has cockroaches.

Even better, you’re going to go there and actually get up and close with one. Heck, you might as well pick it up and stare him in the eyes. What an awesome way to kiss that fear goodbye.

Task: First off, I want you to write down a list of things you are afraid of. It doesn’t matter if they are big or small, just throw them down on a piece of paper.

Secondly, I want you to go back and look at your fears and figure out what you could do to overcome them. Brainstorm some ideas and write them down next to the fears.

Last but not least, I want you to set a goal to try to overcome at least one of the fears. Even better, try a handful of them and see what happens.

So what are you waiting? Get out there and make 2010 the best year ever!

One of the toughest obstacles I have had in my blogging journey is trying to pick a direction. It’s really difficult to decide on a path and stick to it.

When I first started blogging, it was more of a diary where I shared my stories, drunken adventures, and cubicle rants. Since then, my blog has evolved a few times.

Finding A Direction

Over the last few weeks, I have really taken some time to sit down and think of a direction. I knew it had to be done because without a clear direction there is no place to go. After digging deep, I concluded that my blog is about the digital nomad lifestyle.

In other words, I want to focus on my journey to make a living working from my computer. I want to share my adventures of not having a “real job” and all of the pros and cons that come along with them. I also want to share my travel stories from around the world since my main reason for wanting to be a digital nomad is the ability to work from anywhere.

Not Just Stories

However, I do not want to simply focus on stories. I also want to share my knowledge and give everyone tips on how to follow in my footsteps. I will share the things that have worked as well as the things that haven’t. I will continue to post how-to’s on blogging, freelancing, and traveling. I also plan on creating a few products relating to all of those topics. I have accumulated a ton of information over the last year and cannot wait to let it all out.

Ask Yourself Now…Not Later

That’s enough about my direction. The reason I wrote this post was to clarify how important it is to pick a direction now. When I first started writing, I constantly told myself I would morph this thing as time went on. To my luck, it has worked pretty well. But it hasn’t made it easy for me. Choosing a direction for your blog now will make it WAY more easier to reach your goals. It will give you a clear idea of where you want to be and what you need to do to get there. Here’s a few questions you should ask yourself:

What Is My Blog About?

Who Is My Target Audience?

What Do I Plan To Accomplish With My Blog?

Do I Want To Make Money From My Blog?

If So, How Much Money?

Of course, there are just some basic questions. The real key is to figure out where you want to be. Do you want to be the most popular blog in a certain niche? Or do you just want to keep blogging as a hobby? The sooner you figure out your direction, the sooner you will get to your destination. Do you know where you want to get? If so, please feel free to share your goals below!

Believe it or not, 2009 is just around the corner. So I thought I would take a little time and take another look at the list of goals I had for 2008. If you missed it, check out my goal list from a few months back.

Four Goals Remaining

After crossing off a lot of the goals, I still had four remaining. Luckily, I have since crossed some of them off. Here are some details:

Give More Back

I wanted to find a way to give more back and help people out. I managed to do this by growing a mustache for a month. I helped over a thousand students here in Phoenix and it felt great.

Work For Myself

Since I last wrote about my goals, I have managed to take the plunge and quit the office job I hated. I have not looked back since and have been working as hard as I can to make a living on my own. Through blogging and freelance work I have managed to make it so far.

Sell My Car

I had my car listed for 4 months without many responses, until someone emailed me last week. That person then decided to purchase the car and took it off my hands on Saturday. This was a huge stepping stone for me and am so glad I no longer have any car payments are car insurance to worry about. Now it’s time to adjust to not having a vehicle…

Be 100% Debt Free

This is the only goal left. I have not yet hit the 100% debt free mark, but selling the car and paying of the car loan was a huge step. That made up more than 70% of my debt that I was trying to pay off. Now it’s just a matter of making some extra money and paying off my student loan and a little bit of credit card debt. It’s just a matter of time before I hit the 100% debt free mark.

So there is a last look my goals for 2008. It was a great year and I managed to do almost everything I wanted to. Did you accomplish the things you wanted to this year?

Time To Attempt Some Guinness Records

As mention yesterday, I have decided to take a few shots at breaking some Guinness Records. I figured it would be a great way to come up with some new YouTube videos to share. Plus I have a feeling they will be pretty damn entertaining, especially if I fail miserably. Even if I fail at all of them, at least I can say I tried, haha.

So after some investigating, it appears I have two different options I can try and do. Here they are:

1. Break An Old Record

The most commonly attempted records are those that already exists. People constantly try and break old records in hope of getting in the book. I went to the bookstore the other day and did a quick glance at some of the current records in the book. Here was a few that stuck out:

Peel and eat a lemon in 10 seconds

Peel and eat 3 bananas in one minute

Fastest mile sack racing: 16mins 41secs

Time to hop on one leg on a treadmill at a constant speed of 6.5 km/h (4.7 mph): 2 min 17 sec

I think all of these records are worthy of an attempt. Who knows, I might even find a way to break one of them. I will keep an eye out for some other records that might be possible. If you know of any records that you might think I should try, please feel free to mention them in a comment.

2. Set A New Record

The second option is to set a completely new record. This would be the easiest since I don’t have to actually break a record. I just have to come up with some ideas for records that do not currently exist (there is a ton of them). The first thing idea I came up with is based on a record I saw in the book for the longest distance traveled in 24 hours on a bunch of different things. A car, a bicycle, and a few others.

What didn’t I see? The longest distance traveled in 24 hours on rollerblades…

I have decided that one of these days, probably on a weekend, I am going to see just how far I can get on rollerblades. I might try to blade across Phoenix, which is a very, very large and spread out city. I will videotape the whole adventure and make a YouTube video for everyone to see.

The Game Plan

My first attempt is going to come over the next few days. I am not sure exactly which record I am going to try first but either way it will be a funny thing to see. So please check back for the very first Life of Justin Guinness World Record attempt!

PS. As mentioned above, please feel free to leave some record ideas for me to attempt.

Back in February, I made a post titled 10 Unusual Goals for 2008. The post contained ten things that I wanted to accomplish this year. After looking back at it, I wanted to make some updates and cross some things off.

So here they are:

Blog My Life

This is my favorite goal on the list, and I can honestly say I have succeeded at it.

Be On a Television Show

This isn't something I really care about anymore, but I did manage to get on a reality television show here in Phoenix.

Act In A Movie

At this point in life, I am not real concerned about acting in a movie. It would be great, but it can wait. Therefore it's getting crossed off.

Make Boatloads Of Money

In the beginning of the year, I wanted nothing more than to make tons of money. However, I have since realized that money is not what I am after. I even made a list of things that make me happy besides money. Therefore, this goal is gone, poof.

The post contained ten things that I wanted to accomplish this year. After looking back at it, I wanted to make some updates and cross some things off.

So here they are:

Blog My Life

This is my favorite goal on the list, and I can honestly say I have succeeded at it.

Be On a Television Show

This isn’t something I really care about anymore, but I did manage to get on a reality television show here in Phoenix.

Act In A Movie

At this point in life, I am not real concerned about acting in a movie. It would be great, but it can wait. Therefore it’s getting crossed off.

Make Boatloads Of Money

In the beginning of the year, I wanted nothing more than to make tons of money. However, I have since realized that money is not what I am after. I even made a list of things that make me happy besides money. Therefore, this goal is gone, poof.

Grow My Hair Back

If you haven’t noticed from my pictures, my hair is officially back!

Travel, Travel, and yes, Travel

This, along with blogging, is my second favorite goal on the list. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to travel a lot in the last few months. The road trip to California alone was a ton of traveling and I hope to do more in the future.

Go On A Date With A Celebrity

I am not sure why this made the list, but I really have better things to do than date a celebrity. Plus I am already dating someone. Therefore, this is getting crossed off the list as well.

Take More Pictures

Ever since I renewed my Pro Flickr account and started traveling, I have been taking a ton of pictures. Now that I found a way to incorporate them into this site, I have no problems sticking to this goal.

What’s Left To Do?

After crossing off all the goals I accomplished or no longer want to do, it leaves me with a few others. The first two are from the original list:

Give More Back

I wanted to give back to the world, and I still feel this way. Unfortunately, I have not done the best job at doing this. Therefore it is staying on the list.

Work For Myself (In Progress)

One of the things I really wanted to accomplish this year, was working for myself. Unfortunately, I am still working the shitty office job I was then. However, I have managed to freelance with a few companies and helped setup some blogs. So it is a work in progress.

Sell My Car

I have been taking the bus for a long time now and no longer need my car. If your interested in a 2005 Chevy Cobalt SS, check it out on Autotrader.

Be 100% Debt Free

I have managed to get a lot closer to being where I want to be. I have managed to pay off all my credit cards and bills, leaving my vehicle, which I hope to sell, and my student loan. I am 100% positive I can be completely debt free by the end of the year if I continue to work at it.

So there you have it, an update on what I hope to accomplish by the end of 2008.

Today I wanted to share with everyone two cool websites that allow you to create a list of goals and places you want to visit.

43Things.com

This site allows you to make a list of 43 things you want to do in your life. It is very cool to be able to pick some goals from a list because you can see other people that share the same goal with you.

It also allows you to create goals yourself if they have not already been created by someone else.

One you complete a goal, you can then check it off and it gets moved to your things I have done list. It allows you to add in some text so you can talk about the goal and lets you decide if it was worth it or not.

Here is 10 of the 43 things I have on my list:

43Places.com

This site is just like 43 Things, only it lets you pick 43 Places you want to go in the world. It can be a city, state, country, or even an event or building.

It has a ton of options and even gives you a travel map of where you have been and where you want to go. It is really cool to see how many places people want to visit and it took some time for me to fill my list.

After enough searching, I managed to come up with my list of 43 Places (Oops now it is 42). You can check out 10 of them here:

If anyone created an account or already has one, please feel free to share your username in a comment below and I would love to see your list of things to do and places to see.
