So Long Texas Shaped Pool

While living in Phoenix, I looked up our apartment complex here in Austin to get a good idea of where it was. To my surprise, I came across this in Google Maps:

texas-shaped-pool

Not sure what you are looking at? It’s a kickass pool shaped like the state of Texas. I was jacked to see this thing. So I spent some time on Google and came across this post titled State-shaped Swimming Pools. It turns out their are a total of 6 (soon to be 5) pools shaped like the state of Texas.

The Sad News

Unfortunately, we arrived here in Austin only to see the Texas shaped pool covered up with a trampoline style pool cover. I was heart broken. I…

The Congress Bridge Bats

June 19 2009

I never would of expected that Austin is the home of the largest urban bat colony in the United States. It turns out there are around 1.5 million bats that call the Congress Avenue bridge home from March until November. I just so happen to live right next to the bridge so they fly over our apartment complex every night.

Flight of the Bats

Here’s a video of the bats coming out at around 8:15 PM:

Near My Apartment

Here’s another video of the bats flying in streaks right near my apartment complex.

An Awesome Used Clothing Store

June 17 2009
by Justin Wright

One of the coolest places I have ever shopped at was Buffalo Exchange in Tempe, AZ. It’s a used clothes store that sells everything from T-shirts and jeans to hats and shoes. Best part of all is the fact that they will also buy your clothes in exchange for cash or store credit. It’s a great way to trade in some old clothes for some new stuff.

If you plan on getting anything, make sure to take the store credit as they will always give you more than if you opt for the cash. If they don’t want some of your clothes, they usually have a bin for donations so you don’t have to take the clothes home with you.…

ROT Motorcycle Rally

This past weekend was the Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally. It’s the largest bike rally in the state of Texas and it’s not hard to tell. I could not believe how many bikers were around.

There were tons of things going on including a Robbie Knieval jump near the capital building, midget wrestling, and a Hank Williams Jr. concert.

The Parade

The coolest part of all was the Rot Rally Parade where they lined up all the bikers and had them come downtown. It was 45 minutes of non-stop bikes. Since my recording was way too long for YouTube, I extracted the first 10 minutes of the parade. Check it out:

Off To 6th Street

Once the parade was over and all the…

Austin Tweetups

June 12 2009
by Justin Wright

Since I’ve moved to Austin, I’ve been trying my hardest to attend every event related to social media, blogging, and business in general. I even started a Beer and Blog Austin chapter I’m hoping to kick off soon.

Of all the events so far, tweetups have become one of my favorite ways to meet new people that are interested in new media and technology. And it just so happens there are a few tweetups here in Austin that are coming up over the next week that I wanted to share with everyone.

Kickball Tweetup

Date: Sunday, June 14th

Time: 6:00 – 8:30 PM

Location: Clarksville Park

@Daveiam and @AaronMSB are putting on a kickball tweetup that should be a bunch of fun. It’s a BYOB event which makes it perfect…

Last night was the season opener for our Austin kickball league, which is being put on by the Parks and Recreation crew. It’s a great time and a fun way to meet new people. Best part of all is that a lot of the players drink beer, wine, or booze during the games (myself included). It’s the perfect combination of two very unique sports…

The only downside is beer doesn’t taste as good when it starts coming up as you round third base. I guess it’s the price to pay the game.

1-0 So Far

We started off with a big win beating Project Mayhem 10-2. My team did an awesome job and worked perfectly as a team. My girlfriend…

The Austonian Is Rising

Since I was little kid, I’ve always been interested in skyscrapers and skylines. There is something about tall buildings that just makes me think “awesome” when I see them. I love seeing skylines and I have had the pleasure of seeing many of them from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Anyways, the skyline here in Austin happens to be changing pretty rapidly. Just check out the two pictures I took below and see if you can notice the difference:

The New Tallest Building in Austin

If you didn’t notice, there is a new building on the rise near the middle of the picture. The building, which is called The Austonian, is quickly becoming the tallest building in Austin. …

National Trails Day Was A Success

I just got back from National Trails Day and it was a blast! We managed to pick up an entire dumpster worth of garbage and hauled it out to the parking lot. It was amazing how much stuff we were able to pull out.

The dump site we cleaned up was located a good mile or so inside the green belt so it took a lot of lifting and dragging to get the bags out. Luckily, there were about 25 members in our group and we worked as a team to relay the garbage bags along the trails.

We came across one snake amongst the garbage but luckily it was not poisonous. A few volunteers also spotted a scorpion hanging…

If you happen to live in Austin, you may have heard about National Trails Day happening tomorrow at the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Volunteers will be helping to keep Austin beautiful by doing various projects.

Here is a quick overview of the event from the Austin Parks Foundation website:

The National Trails Day Service Project is a joint conservation effort made possible through a partnership of American YouthWorks’ Environmental Corps, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, the Austin Parks Foundation, the Hill Country Conservancy and Austin-area REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) stores.

300 Volunteers Are Already Signed Up

Although the projects are all full, they are still accepting general assistance volunteers to help with various things. If you are interested in helping out,…
