San Diego Hostel Review

The Front Of The Hostel

The Front Of The Hostel

As promised in my last post, I am going to do a few reviews of the hostels I stayed at while out here in California. They are a great way to stay in expensive cities and locations while on a budget. Plus they are a lot of fun!

The first one up is the San Diego hostel, which is ran by USA Hostels.

Location

The best part of all about the San Diego hostel was the location. It’s located in the heart of the Gas lamp Quarter which made it super easy to walk around downtown. Once we found a place to park our car for the stay, we never needed to use it again.

There are tons of bars and shops in the Gas lamp quarter and it was easy to find things to do. I don’t think we could of asked for a better location than this hostel.

The Building

One of the things that is hit or miss with hostels is the building it self. Some of them are old and can be pretty dirty on the inside, which makes a stay rather unpleasant.

Luckily, the San Diego hostel was far from dirty. The place was not only clean, but also really cool. It reminded me of some of the houses you see on shows like the Real World.

Here is a cool view looking down from our floor:

The People

One of the things I love about staying in hostels is meeting people from all over the world. It sure beats sitting in a hotel room and not meeting anyone. Luckily, I was able to meet a few cool people in this hostel. Some of them were from the states while others were from Germany, England, and India. We ended up having a few beers in the lounge of the hostel and getting into some intense discussions about all sorts of things. We covered everything from business to arranged marriages…

The people were also really friendly and honest. I left my video camera (along with my girlfriends wallet) on top of the vending machine and managed to get it back. Someone had turned it in to the front desk. Very cool!

The Price

The total cost of staying at the hostel was 22 bucks a night. That’s pretty damn cheap if you ask me. Especially since it was located directly downtown where hotels are much more expensive.

Overall, I would highly recommend staying at this place if you ever find yourself in San Diego. It’s pretty clean, has a friendly staff, and it’s cheap. Heck, they even give free unlimited pancakes for breakfast (if you are willing to make them yourself).

  1. Hey Justin,

I haven’t visited your site for awhile but this article intrigued me and I had to stop by. What a neat way of saving money while traveling. I started a new site, all about getting free stuff (Sweeties Swag). I would like to write about hostels as a way of saving when you travel and I would like to quote your article. Is that okay?

Also, have you heard of Couch Surfing (http://www.couchsurfing.com)? It’s a way of trading houses, or even staying at someone’s house for free when you travel. It definitely looks like something you should try out.

Your blog popped up on my google alerts and I wanted to say thank you on behalf of the hostel management and staff for your nice comments about our hostel. It’s always great to see a compliment from a guest who had a positive experience. I’ll pass along your blog to the staff and manager there. Happy Travels!

Dude I’m totally jealous. You travel the way I would like to travel, but I can’t convince any of my lame friends to follow suite.

If your friends are being lame, there are only two options. Say screw them and go by yourself or make some new friends who like to travel too. Whatever you do, don’t let something like that stop you from living you life.

  4. Nice hostel, in particular I’m interested in going to the bar jejeje,
