10 WordPress Plugins You Can’t Miss
When it comes to using Wordpress, nothing beats plugins. They make our lives easier by doing the things we don’t want to. They add features that aren’t included in Wordpress and overall make our blogs (and lives) better.
I decided it was time to share some of the best Wordpress plugins I have been using here on Life of Justin. Some of you may already be using a lot of these but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to…
Lucia’s Linky Love Has Been Installed
As many of you know, I wrote a post awhile back entitled This Blog Is Now DoFollow. In this post, I talked about how I decided to make all of my comment links DoFollow to give back to my readers. I’d like to share my experience along with the changes I have decided to make. First up, the bad things:
Bad Thing #1: Large Increase In Comment Spam
Believe it or not, my comment spam has grown to the point of being a hassle. I have to moderate all of my posts before I can approve them. Even Akismet does not pick these up and there is a reason why. The reason?
The comments are made by real people, not bots. I have tried implementing the simple math plugin along with a simple captcha but neither of these worked because every comment passed.
Here are a few of the comments I am talking about:
- “Great Blog”
- “Useful content indeed, will be back”
- “Great posts I like it”
- “Love it”
The main reason I can tell these are spam is because the people didn’t even bother to read my post. Some of the comments I deleted were totally irrelevant to the post itself. I even had one person paste the same comment on three different posts!
This Blog is Now DoFollow
Four Reasons I Made The Change
First off, you might ask what does DoFollow mean?
Normally, when someone comments on a blog, the link the person receives back to their site is marked a “NoFollow,” which Google does not count. This was done to help limit the amount of spam people leave on websites. The problem with this is it takes away a lot of incentive for readers to leave feedback since they feel they do not get anything out of it.
Why I Made The Change to Dofollow:
1. It Helps Your Readers
Blogging is all about building friendships with fellow bloggers and helping one another. It’s like a big community and we try to share our success with others who have just started. One important way to help those who are just getting started, is by giving them a backlink to their site. I think it is really important to reward those who come to your blog and leave a meaniful comment about your post. It’s a way of saying “Thanks, I really appreciate the fact you read my post.”
Flickr Photo Album For Wordpress
Last night, I managed to stay up very late and incorporate a huge new addition for Life of Justin. That would be the new Photo’s Page, which can also be accessed via the Photos button above.
The one thing I was struggling to do with this website was incorporate photos. I have thousands of pictures and it becomes very hard to share them with anyone. I have had a Pro Flickr account for a year now and I try to upload my favorite pictures there whenever I…
ShareThis Plug-In For Wordpress
Today a new feature was added to LifeofJustin.com that will make it easier for readers to share my posts with others. When I was using Blogger, I had a Digg button on my right sidebar that allowed people to Digg my site but this did not allow people to share certain posts.
Now that I am using Wordpress, tons of plug-ins are available to make things work much better, and more importantly, easier. The name of the plug-in I am using is called ShareThis and it is available for free.…
