The Drive to Las Vegas

Before we went out last night, we decided on driving to Las Vegas today. I was not sure if it was actually going to happen or not but guess what…it did.

We took off from Phoenix around 2:00 PM and started on the journey that turned out to be a pretty boring drive, haha. There really isn’t much happening between Vegas and Phoenix besides a few small towns and a lot of mountains.

We ended up driving through a small town that had a Goldrush Days event happening with a carnival and all. Did we stop? Of course not. All we cared about was getting to Sin City as fast as we could. One of the coolest parts of the trip was when we hit the Nevada border and had to drive over the Hoover Dam. It was the first time I had ever seen it so I took a few pictures of it from the scenic lookout point. Checkout the picture below:

For some reason, the dam always seemed to be larger on TV or in the movies than it actually was in person. It is still impressive to see though and it makes you wonder how they built something. What else was impressive is the fact that they are building a large overpass that goes over the top of the dam so you do not even have to slow down for it. It looks like it will be awhile before it is done since there was only a few pillars up and they were more than 100 feet high.

The drive took us somewhere around 5 hours total and that included a stop in Kingman, AZ for something to eat. The nice thing was that we gained an hour once we hit Nevada so we ended up getting to Vegas before 7. The first thing I thought when we came into Las Vegas was that it is a lot bigger than I had thought. On TV, you always see the strip and thats about it but in reality the area has something like 2 million people living in it. It reminded me a lot of Phoenix and it almost feels the exact same only its a little smaller. The main difference would have to be the strip where all the lights are.

The first thing we did when we got to Vegas is stopped at Ryan’s friends house that lives there. We stopped in for a few beers and talked for awhile about where were thinking of going and where to find a hotel room.

At this point, we are still not sure where we are going but we are going to head down to the strip now and find a place to stay. I will make another detailed post tomorrow and let you know how my first night in Vegas went, I can promise you it’s going to be interesting…

Vegas is an amazing city. You are lucky you went in February! The closer it gets to summer the hotter the temperatures get!

  3. Hi there Las Vegas Maniac! :)

5 hours is for sure a long drive, but it seems like you thought it was worth it :)
