Time To Get A Job?
Tags:
The past few days, I spent some time looking back at my archives. More importantly, I took a look at some of my most popular posts. A majority of them, were a mix between humor and in-depth analysis of how much office jobs suck. People related to what I was saying and it made them come back to find more.
Well if you haven’t noticed, over the last few weeks I have been running out of things to write about. Why? I am not exactly sure, but I have a pretty good guess…
It’s Because I Work From Home
You read that right! The fact that I don’t have a job has really taken away my ability to write some awesome posts. I do not have anything to make fun of or complain about. I can’t make fun of things I see because when you work from home, you really don’t see much of the outside world. I spend a good portion of my time on my computer or watching Bernie Mac and The Fresh Prince reruns…
I even got hooked on the show Degrassi: The Next Generation. I never even heard of the show 2 months ago, and now I could name every character and what their story is. Sad I know…
Time To Get Out Of The House
So starting today, I am going to make it a habit to get outside more often. Work from the coffee shop instead of the living room. That way I can get back to writing about life and the things that happen in the world. Better yet, I can start ranting about things I hate…like Bank of America (again).
However, I don’t think getting out of the house is enough. I need a job…
The Job Hunt Begins
So starting next week (going to Austin this week), I am going to start looking for jobs. But don’t get me wrong, there is no way in hell I am looking for an office job. Not even close. I am looking for a sweet part-time job where I can have some fun or at least meet people while I am there.
So far, I was thinking of applying at Chuck E. Cheese, the bookstore, and an amusement park near my house. These all sound like they have some decent potential. Besides, I have no problems whatsoever if I have to quit 3 days after starting because I hate it.
Do You Have Any Ideas Or Recommendations?
So I thought I would ask my readers for some ideas on what type of job I should get. Who knows, I could even turn this into another experiment. Instead of going 7 days without spending, how about working at Wal-Mart for 7 days?
So please, feel free to share your job ideas. Perhaps your favorite job you ever had. I am not worried about the pay, as this is only for something to do. So don’t hold back!

Haha, chucke cheese would probably be pretty funny. If you can handle screaming kids all day!
How about a coffe shop or something?
Hi Justin,
I have the same problem as you do. I work at home and go from room to room with no one to talk to. Did anyone tell us it would be like this? Freedom but being alone isn’t all that fun after all. But still, I wouldn’t trade it to work with “idiots” again.
I have been thinking the same thing because I only go out once a week to get groceries and now I find that I sit in this chair so much that I need a Chiropractor.
Since I don’t want to work in an office or a retail store I have the same problem and I also want to do something that suits my personality. And, being in the cold North I would rather stay at home in the Winter so I can’t get motivated to work away from home.
So, for me, it is a bit challenging but for you here are some of my suggestions:
- Volunteer at a museum and there might be a part-time job in the future.
- Get involved with the local rodeo
- work at a movie theater (you get to watch free movies that way)
- work at a local theater taking tickets (sometimes this is volunteer as well)
- work at the front counter of a local gym
Good luck! Wendy

Chuck E. Cheese smells like feet. My brother worked at a bookstore in college and said it was really easy and you get a chance to interact with people, so that one might be a good idea.
I can relate. I’ve also started watching Degrassi. Can’t really get into it, but I stop every time to watch a little of it. Let me know how Austin is. Maybe some sites to see. I’m heading there for one of my Summer trips. Always wanted to go.
Do not work at Wal-Mart!!
Although it has several good benefits (15 minute breaks, a full hour lunch if you work 7-9 hours that day, 10% off discount card, etc), I felt extremely disconnected from people. And I was a cashier!
A bookstore or a coffee shop sounds like a cool place to work. It allows for a more conversational environment than other places that want to get as many customers in and out as possible.
Try Trader Joe’s. The people that work their actual seem to like their job. It is weird compared to all the other places you go where most people seem about as happy as a 6 year old that hasn’t slept in 2 days and is being asked to clean his room.
Man, definitely not a place that will want you to be serious. I think of a cool local sports store with a down to earth employer. bookstore may be ok, but a bit boring. You may get to talk to some people, but not really.
F%^& Walmart man, I am sure you will not want that or McDs
I am not sure what you have close to you, but a store at a mall or some place where there are a lot of people.
Good luck,
How about a job at an arena or stadium? Get to see sporting events and concerts for free and you’re guaranteed to see tons of wacky people and situations. I worked at Gillette Stadium (home of the Patriots) and saw some football games, tons of unruly drunks, attractive girls, sweet concerts. It certainly wasn’t boring.
The highlight was when I worked auditions for American Idol. As you can imagine, there were tons of blog-worthy singers (good and bad — wish I had a small video camera), plus I hitchhiked home (safely!) for the first time ever (turns out the driver had just dropped his daughter off at the auditions).
I enjoyed my time at Auntie Anne’s solely for the fact that I can now exploit their secrets and make delicious pretzels in my very own oven. I also discovered a lot of new dip/flavor combos that have spiced up my life (pun: lame but intended).
I like the idea of working at an indie cafe or small restaurant. I also love shopping at the local farmers markets and wouldn’t mind working at a booth once or twice a week. That sounds like heaven! I’m currently working 50 hours a week at my day-job, plus running an eTail website and blogging so I would love to be in your shoes right now.
I think working part time in a coffee shop would be lovely, I for one would definitely want that … the aroma of coffee is just enticing. But then again with my full time job, grad school and blogging don’t have time to squeeze that in.
Hi Justin,
It is great to see that you are able to live without the constriction of a 9 – 5 job. Getting a part time job at Wal Mart sounds great. It will be interesting to work in areas that are tourist spots to gain some new exposure from people all over the world. Hope to hear your decision soon
Cheers

It is refreshing to see your point about the article ideas that came to you due to interactions at a place of employment. It makes sense that the frustrations and situations brought up at a work environment would lend themselves to further discussion. The idea that you will then look for a job to bring back that source of material is a fitting response.
